Benefits of Exogenous Ketone Supplements

In an ideal situation, when the body requires energy, the liver breaks down glycogen to produce glucose, the primary source of energy. However, in some cases, the body lacks glycogen due to inadequate dietary intake, physical exertion, chronic stress, and metabolic disorders affecting glycogen storage, such as Cori disease. In other instances, the individual may be on a ketogenic diet, which typically features few carbohydrates. In such cases, the liver resorts to breaking down fats to produce alternative energy for brain and muscle function through endogenous ketosis. However, as the energy levels from fats are significantly lower than glucose, individuals may supplement natural ketosis with ketone supplements (also known as exogenous ketone supplements), such as ketone salts and esters, to boost the natural ketones.

Ketone salts occur as artificial ketones combined with electrolytes such as magnesium. However, high electrolyte levels can be harmful to people with issues like kidney disease due to electrolyte filtration limitations. On the other hand, ketone esters, the more potent of the two, provide extended ketosis durations, with lower risks of excess electrolytes. Exogenous keto supplements have several benefits, including rapid uptake, enhanced cognitive function, neuroprotection, and improved physical performance…
